COSEQUIN PRESENTS OTTB SHOWCASE: MR. MESO (A.K.A. “MESO”)

We’ve all heard the sayings, “She’s a horse person,” or “he’s a dog person.” We align and label
ourselves with our likes, interests and passions. This week’s horse has done the same thing in his
life, and if you ask anyone who knows him, they would tell you that Mr. Meso is definitely a
“people horse.”

“First and foremost, this horse absolutely loves people,” said Mr. Meso’s owner and trainer,
Matthew Clarke. “He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.”

From all accounts, Mr. Meso has been like this his whole life, and just like a child who is the
result of good parenting, credit has to be given to those who raised Meso.
Mr. Meso was bred by and for a number of years raced for Lloyd Lockhart’s Cedar Lock Farm,
winning a maiden special in his second start before going on to be a multiple stakes winner at
two, and going on to win stakes the following year and several years after.

Suffolk: Three-peat bid for Southoftheborder in First Episode Stakes

Lloyd Lockhart just turned 88, and his family hopes that his homebred Southoftheborder will give him the perfect birthday gift when she carries his colors for the final time Saturday while defending consecutive titles in the $50,000 First Episode Stakes for Massachusetts-breds at Suffolk Downs.

"Winning this race three years in a row with her would be sweet, and it would be such a nice birthday present for my grandfather," said Alan Lockhart, who took over the training duties from Lloyd this year. "She's 10 now, and this will be the last race of her career. My grandfather is going to try to be here."

Southoftheborder, who has won 8 of 54 starts, didn't show much in her last effort, the $50,000 Isadorable for statebred fillies and mares Aug. 3, but it was only her second start after an 11-month layoff, and both of those races were at six furlongs. The First Episode, also restricted to females, will be at a mile 70 yards, and the two turns should suit her better.

Multiple graded stakes-winning trainer Tim Hills; four-time New England-bred champion Ask Queenie and her owner/breeder Lloyd Lockhart; jockey Leroy Moyers; and longtime publicity director Bob Varey are the newly-elected members of the New England Turf Writers Hall of Fame.

"This is a wonderful honor," said Hills, a Nashua, N.H. native who began his career at Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs 37 years ago and has 1,883 career wins from 12,133 starts with $36,352,568 in earnings through May 12. "I am humbled and flattered."

Hills, who moved his operation to the New Jersey/New York and Florida circuits in the 1990s has consistently been among the top tier trainers there and took home leading trainer honors at Monmouth Park in 2002 and 2004. Former New England-based multiple graded stakes winner San's the Shadow is among his many stakes winners.

Ask Queenie is one of the most decorated and celebrated Massachusetts-breds in history. She was bred and owned by Lloyd Lockhart and trained by his daughter, Lori Lockhart.

Massachusetts-based superstar mare Ask Queenie has been retired after an eight-year career that included 20 state-bred stakes wins at Suffolk Downs. In recognition of her achievements, Suffolk Downs will salute Ask Queenie Oct. 30 2010.

The 9-year-old daughter of Key Contender won or placed in 56 of her 63 starts, for career earnings of $780,365, more than any other Massachusetts-bred in history, according to a release.

Ask Queenie will be paraded in the paddock before making her way to the winner’s circle for a retirement ceremony. The celebration is scheduled to take place after the fourth race, at approximately 2:15 p.m. Souvenir photos of Ask Queenie will be given out at the ceremony.

Ask Queenie’s success is attributable to three generations of the Lockhart family, which has maintained a presence on the New England racing scene for decades.  Owned by Laurine Barreira, Ask Queenie was bred by Barreira’s grandfather Lloyd Lockhart and trained by her mother Lori Lockhart.

In a racing oddity, a three-horse entry sent out by owner Lloyd Lockhart and his trainer, daughter Lori Lockhart, finished 1-2-3 in the $25,000 Highland Happening Stakes for fillies and mares at Suffolk Downs yesterday.

Reprized Dream, No. 1a, hit the wire a nose ahead of Weepecket, No. 1x, with Vurze, No. 1, another 2 lengths back in third. Suffolk records are incomplete, but it is believed to be the first time such a finish has occurred at the track, which opened in 1935.

The Highland Happening was taken off the turf, and the original field of 12 was scratched to seven. Gingerbread Girl set the early pace, but once she tired, the entry, which was favored at 8-5 ($5.20 to …
